Liberia and China Break Ground on Two China-Aid Overpass Bridges, Reaffirming Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Relations

At long last, the Governments of Liberia and China on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at the Ministerial Complex, broke grounds for the construction of two overpass bridges along the Tubman Boulevard.

The Ceremony brought together an array of dignitaries including the Presidency, the Chinese Embassy accredited near Monrovia, Members of the Legislature, the Cabinet, Officials and Staff of the Ministry of Public Works, Montserrado County Local Government, Civil Society, Performers, all and sundry.

Making special remarks, H. E. President Joseph Nyumah Boakai lauded the People’s Republic of China for the goodwill gesture.

“Once these bridges are completed, there will be a visible sign of Government keeping its promises of improving the efficiency of the Road Network of our country”, President Boakai asserted.

The Liberian Chief Executive also indicated that the two overpass bridges are designed to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve safety for motorists and pedestrians; thus boosting economic activity by ensuring the free flow of goods and services.

For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Liberia.

Ambassador Chengwu used the occasion to thank the Liberian Government by and through the Ministry of Public Works and other Agencies of Government for the commencement of the project.

He furthered: “China and Liberia are thousands of miles apart, but our hearts are at close wavelength.”

Also speaking, Public Works Minister Roland Layfette Giddings said the construction of these overpasses at the Ministerial Complex and the SKD Boulevard Junction will not be just a giant-size bridge of concrete and steel, but two aesthetic pieces of infrastructure.

Minister Giddings also thanked the Chinese Government for the level of support to Liberia, recounting the many contributions to Liberia’s development through Roads, Education, Health, amongst others.
