Official Groundbreaking of the Two China-Aid Overpasses held at the Ministerial Complex
On September 2, 2025, at the Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, the Governments of Liberia and China officially broke ground for the construction of two China-aid overpass bridges along Tubman Boulevard.
The ceremony brought together President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu, members of the Legislature, Cabinet officials, public works authorities, and dignitaries from across Liberia.
President Boakai praised China’s support, highlighting the project’s role in reducing traffic congestion, improving safety, and boosting economic activity. Ambassador Chengwu reaffirmed China’s commitment to Liberia, while Public Works Minister Roland Giddings emphasized the project’s significance as both functional and aesthetic infrastructure.
Deputy Minister Prince Tambah outlined the project cost of $36.6M, to be completed within 24 months.
Project Scope
- West Overpass (Ministerial Complex): 300m bridge + 2.3km of roads
- East Overpass (SKD Boulevard Junction): 180m bridge + 1.8km of roads
- Duration: September 2025 – August 2027
This landmark initiative symbolizes the growing partnership between Liberia and China, strengthening bilateral ties and advancing Liberia’s infrastructure development.
